Movers
Don’t use those cheapie movers!
Submitted by ralph on Thu, 09/06/2007 - 19:58.You saw the name on the truck that delivered my stuff here this morning, right? It looked as though it had been painted on the side on with a 9 inch brush using lime- wash. “Jack’s or Sid’s” or some such name. Movers, my eye. When I took my check book out to pay, the driver growled ‘cash only, company policy’. I had to run to an ATM while these so-called movers sat in my kitchen guzzling the few beers in the six-pack I bought this morning. I guess that was part of the company policy as well.
All movers are different. Some are good and some are even great. The others… Well, I won’t be recommending them if you are looking for movers. Make up your mind and pay for a reliable firm of movers. Use one from the yellow pages or use a firm of movers that a friend has recommended. Looking for movers is not a do-it-yourself job. You can really get yourself into trouble. What do I do now if my bed collapses tonight as a result of the move? They have probably washed the name off the truck and I paid in cash. I have nowhere to go and no recourse.
Selecting the appropriate movers
Submitted by ralph on Fri, 08/31/2007 - 12:51.Whatever you do don't rush in with choosing movers. Movers should be carefully chosen. You can do this by talking with friends and relatives who have relocated or simply by accessing mover sites on the Internet and select the most appropriate and genuine. The problem with movers is that they always agree to everything you want to do, whether it's the direction of location or the manner of packing the articles and everything to do with moving. However, the moment you are committed you could find that they are not professional and that they and the vehicle are not to your liking. By then you have paid up part of the sum and it's too late to do much about it.
The point is that when you decide to call the movers you are in a state of flux. You as movers are excited, flustered and not exactly in the most rational state of mind. You can get angry and wild at the least misunderstanding and mistake. Hence, the need for the most adequate movers to keep you as sane as possible. Moving house is one of the most difficult times for anybody and only the best of movers should be party to your situation.
Keeping my laptop away from the movers
Submitted by ralph on Mon, 08/27/2007 - 19:16.The movers are in the living room and I am in the bedroom working on my laptop. There is no way that I am going to leave my laptop alone with these movers. First of all, some of the four guys out there look pretty scruffy, probably off the street getting paid at hourly rates as movers, carrying and shlepping stuff while they build up a few dollars to spend tomorrow. A laptop would be a great prize.
I move so frequently that I’m getting used to the whole messy business, the packing, the unpacking, the throwing out and the trying to squeeze everything into the new apartment which is always too small no matter how large it is. As far as the movers are concerned, I find it’s all a matter of luck. There are good movers and bad movers, expensive and cheap movers, movers with insurance and movers who tell you they have and don’t even know what the word insurance means.
Every time I go through this moving exercise I pull out my checklist and mentally tick off each item as I question the manager of the moving company. It doesn’t help. Nothing seems to help, except a little good luck.
Wait Movers Have To Offer
Submitted by ralph on Wed, 06/06/2007 - 16:02.It can be said that sooner or later we will all have to move sometime. Usually there is an association with stress and wear and tear on one’s things. It can also cost a lot. You also have to plan ahead as to what you might take and what you might leave. Then there is the expense of having to replace things that get mislead or sold during the move. Finding a good mover to help you with this process is very important.
In the United States alone it is said that as many as 18% are likely to move or to relocate to different places. For this reason there is a real need for full residential moving services and not only have cheap movers but even more important - good movers.
You need to start with the right company for your move. First you need to check out their website. Most companies will have one where you can get a quote as to the possible cost of your move. It is generally a good idea to get at least three quotes beforehand which will be representative so you will have an idea of what it is going to cost. It is possible to do this pure and simple using their website.
There are two types of moves – local or Interstate moves and International or Overseas move.
Local move- This is best defined as a move of no more than about six hours and no longer than 350 miles in distance within the same state or a nearby state. Although not as difficult consideration steal needs to be made for weather conditions.
International move- This is a move that is not so easy. You need to arrange papers and to avoid the migration security problem. That means that us have to be particularly careful about what you are packing to send.
This is much more difficult then moving within the United States since everything must be wrapped and placed within a large plywood container which are loaded into shipping containers. For this you definitely need professional assistance. In fact because of the changed security situation you are not allowed to pack yourself. There are new laws that state what is permissible to ship on international moves. Your professional mover will use a specially designed carton that is heavy enough for fragile items. These items that are not being placed in boxes are wrapped in thick corrugated brown paper. Everything is then fitted into the container. This is all done at the residence before shipment abroad.
